Our History 

Heartland Counseling Services was founded by Katie Ruscitto, PhD, LMHC, ACES, NCC. The first office opened in Storm Lake, Iowa, on July 1, 2021, followed by the Fairfield office in January 2022. Continuing its commitment to expanding access to quality mental health care across Iowa, Heartland Counseling Services opened its Creston office in the spring of 2025.

With more than a decade's experience working as a professional counselor and supervisor, Katie's primary goal was to offer a safe and supportive environment for clients and counselors alike. Safety is a basic human need and a key to positive personal growth and change. ​

Our counselors and therapists have been chosen for their unique specialties and reputation in counseling for having high standards of care, strong therapeutic relationships, and positive outcomes with clients. They offer in office and telehealth services which includes individual, couples, and family counseling.
